Who Should
Apply?

Public Health U courses are designed at the “train the trainers” level for graduates who want a Master’s Level education. We expect potential students to have a first degree that is health-related and/or have the professional experience to cope with this level of study. All students can register, but they need to comply with the academic requirements in order to apply.

Our courses are designed to help with capacity building in developing countries. Those eligible for admission, provided they meet the academic entry criteria, are in the following categories:

  1. Those working in Low- to Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).
  2. Those living and working in High-Income Countries (HICs). We accept a small number of HIC students in each course and expect their participation to enrich the discussion and enable them to study and exchange with a global student group. The fees for HIC students are higher in order to subsidize our provision for LMIC students.

Note: LMICs is a standard definition used by the World Health Organization and World Bank.

Students will be expected to do more than just learn facts. They will be expected to discuss, and synthesize several sources of information, apply critical reasoning, and demonstrate an evidence-based approach. At the beginning of each module, the competencies students are expected to acquire will be outlined. Competencies are knowledge plus skills, and they are expected to be applied to their professional activities.

Our courses are based on the US Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) competencies, which have been contextualized to be relevant to Public Health practice in low-to-middle-income country settings.

The nature of our masters-level program differs from a traditional university in a number of ways. We use freely available online materials (Open Educational Resources) and this, together with volunteer tutors and other supporters, allows us to offer accessible postgraduate education.

After completing the program, our alumni often continue their engagement with us by providing resources and volunteering as tutors, thus building upon our community.

The course is designed to help people with the

practice of public health
