World Health Day 2026: A PHU Volunteer Spotlight

Every year, World Health Day reminds us of the importance of building a healthier, more equitable world. It is a moment to reflect not only on global health challenges but also on the collective responsibility we share in addressing them. At Public Health U (PHU), we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for transforming health outcomes. This year, we are proud to highlight our volunteer, Steven Batanda, Ph.D., in Public Health, a dedicated Program Manager with extensive experience designing and implementing community health promotion programs. It is through the dedication of public health professionals and volunteers like Steven that these ideals are translated into meaningful, community-level impact.

Here’s what he had to say on World Health Day:

Question: Can you please tell us a little about yourself?

“I’m passionate about public health and have a background working on community health projects, especially in underserved areas. Currently, I focus on initiatives that improve access to healthcare and health education for vulnerable populations. Seeing real change at the grassroots level has been incredibly rewarding and motivating.”
Steven Batanda, Ph.D.

Question: What inspired you to volunteer with PHU, and how does this connect to your interest in global health?

“I was inspired to volunteer with PHU because I believe in community-led solutions that create lasting impact. Their focus on empowering local residents aligns with my view that sustainable change occurs when communities take ownership. This experience connects to my interest in global health and supporting efforts to address health disparities worldwide.”
Steven Batanda, Ph.D.

Question: In your view, what role does education play in improving public health outcomes globally?

“Education is vital because it gives people the knowledge they need to make better health choices. When communities understand health issues, they’re more likely to take preventative actions and seek care early. Investing in health education globally is essential for reducing disparities and building healthier populations.”
Steven Batanda, Ph.D.

Question: Can you share a meaningful experience or impact story from your time with PHU?

“As a tutor at PHU, I supervised students’ dissertations and offered personalized guidance. I helped a student clarify their research focus, boosting their confidence and improving their work. This experience highlighted the importance of mentorship in supporting students’ academic growth.”
Steven Batanda, Ph.D.

Question: What message or advice would you share with others who are passionate about improving health in their communities?

“To others passionate about health in their communities, I’d say keep that passion alive and stay curious. Even small actions, like sharing knowledge or supporting local projects, can create big ripple effects. Persistence and genuine engagement are key to making a real difference over time.”
Steven Batanda, Ph.D.

Steven’s journey reminds us that meaningful change in global health begins at the community level. His experiences highlight a powerful truth: when education, mentorship, and local engagement come together, they create lasting impact. At PHU, we are continually inspired by volunteers like Steven, whose dedication helps bridge the gap between knowledge and action, empowering both students and communities to take charge of their health. We encourage our community to reflect on the role each of us can play. Whether through learning, teaching, or community engagement, we all have a part in shaping a healthier, more equitable world.
