Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence in Instructional Design at Public Health U

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing multiple fields, including public health education. Over the past months, Public Health U has strategically integrated AI tools into its processes to make learning materials more accessible, dynamic, and tailored to diverse audiences. By keeping humans first and taking a human-led approach while combining AI tools with the expertise of our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), we create dynamic and engaging learning materials that are evidence-based and globally relevant.  While we are still exploring and learning about the evolving capabilities and limitations of AI, our approach remains intentional and thoughtful.

Using AI to Bridge Educational Gaps: Video Creation & Microlearning

At Public Health U, we harness AI to create user-friendly and impactful learning resources that enhance the educational experience for our students. One of the most notable applications has been AI-driven video creation, enabling us to produce high-quality, cost-effective instructional videos. These visually engaging materials simplify complex public health topics such as climate change, health systems, and evidence-based practices, making them more accessible and relatable for learners worldwide.

In addition, we have leveraged AI to design and implement microlearning modules that enhance student engagement and improve retention. We aim to incorporate microlearning strategies across all our courses to help break down complex content into small, focused segments that are easier to absorb and apply. Microlearning fosters flexible learning by creating targeted activities that reinforce understanding and allow students to progress at their own pace. These modules are interactive, up-to-date, and tailored to address specific public health topics. You can view the Critical and Systems Thinking course on NextGenU.org which features some of our latest AI-enhanced improvements.

A Balanced Approach

Public Health U firmly believes that  AI complements human expertise rather than replaces it. SMEs play a critical role in guiding the use of AI. Our team of SMEs thoroughly reviews and adjusts content created by AI tools, ensuring it is accurate, culturally sensitive, and aligned with the necessary competencies. This meticulous oversight ensures that all AI-supported materials meet the high standards of rigor and reliability expected at PHU.

By combining AI with the knowledge of subject matter expertise, we aim to provide tailored learning experiences to diverse student needs, addressing persistent challenges in public health education. This collaborative approach allows us to innovate while maintaining the human-centered essence of public health education, bridging gaps and tackling persistent challenges in the field.

Here’s what some of our team has to say on the use of AI:

Conclusion

AI is omnipresent, revolutionizing industries and transforming the public health education landscape. At PHU, we reaffirm our commitment to harness AI to bridge learning gaps, enhance resource accessibility, and empower health professionals to address global health challenges effectively. By prioritizing innovation alongside educational integrity, we ensure that AI supports rather than replaces the essential human element in learning.
